The 2020 session at your state capital is off and running as we now enter week four. The first few weeks were mostly used for inauguration, swearing in ceremonies, and organization as many changes were taking place all throughout the capital building. There are many new faces throughout the capital as we now have a new Lieutenant Governor in Delbert Hosemann and a new staff working for him as well. There are also 14 new members in the state senate this term so there has been a lot of transition taking place the last few weeks.
Lt. Governor Hosemann has hit the ground running, however, and last week he named all committee assignments for the next four years in the Mississippi Senate. I was honored to be chosen as the Chairman of the Business and Financial Institution Committee and Vice Chair of Environmental Protection Committee. I will also serve on the Public Health Committee, the Finance Committee, the Agriculture Committee, the Forestry Committee, the Wildlife and Fisheries Committee, the Municipalities Committee, the Investigate State Offices Committee. I believe all these committees fit my background well or at least fit my district I represent, so I am extremely pleased with the confidence the Lt Governor has placed in me to handle the work in these important committees.
Next week committees will start meeting in full force and bills will continue to be filed. As always we can expect upward of 3000 bills to be filed between both houses and some 300 or so really to be considered. It is a tough process, but a necessary process to make sure we pass only the best legislation.
As always it is my honor to serve as your State Senator. It is a job I do not take lightly. Always know you can contact me any time. I may not always be able to help but I will certainly do my best to. God Bless!
