In 2016, there were 18 Republicans running for president, and that was way too many. This election cycle, Democrats seem determined to outdo their philosophical counterparts, and they have indeed done it.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s announcement Thursday makes at least 21 Democrats seeking the chance to take on President Donald Trump in 2020.
As there will be only one Democratic presidential nominee, it’s amazing to think how many politicians misread the tea leaves, incorrectly believing they can come from nowhere to capture a prized nomination. It happened with Republicans in 2016 and it’s happening again this year with Democrats.
To be fair, there are cases when little-known candidates stun the world. Trump is a good example, overlooked by all but a few political observers. But he had a national reputation as a businessman and reality-TV star.
Bill Clinton is a better example. When he started running in 1991, nobody thought the governor of little ole Arkansas had a shot.
Trump and Clinton are the exceptions, not the rules. Too many chefs spoil the food, and that’s what is happening with Democrats today.
