Being a child of the 1960s, the situation in Russia takes on a bit of a familiar feel for me. In the 1960s we had nuclear drills at elementary school. We would grab a book to cover our heads, go into the hall and sit on the floor with our backs toward where we thought the atomic blast might occur.
We also saw the Bay of Pigs fiasco with Cuba. In that situation because Cuba was communist it was thought that then dictator Fidel Castro would have Russian nuclear missiles pointed toward the US.
In 1965 when I started school, the school sold war bonds. You bought stamps once a week to fill up a card. When it was complete you could take it to the bank for a savings bond. The stamps were 10 cent and 25 cent denominations. These were also called War Bonds, which started under President Roosevelt during World War II. Some few years later the program played out. I would think it had something to do with the war in Viet-Nam.
Progress a few years and I joined the National Guard and served from the late 1970s until early 1990s. The largest threats during that time were nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. Now it seems all of that has come full-circle and we are facing the same threats today from Russia and Vladimir Putin.
Russia is setting a very dangerous precedent with their invasion of Ukraine and what may happen from there. Fortunately, Ukraine is much stronger that Putin had expected. His aggression is having a profound impact on the Russian economy with the ruple falling well below the dollar. The embargo has caused limited trade for Russia’s natural gas and wheat.
This will create shortages globally and prices will increase around the world. Now Putin ramps up his nuclear threat against those who oppose him. If this escalates into nuclear warfare, it would have profound consequences around the entire globe.
This could easily lead to yet another world war. There really are not many options to change the situation other than prayer, which most of us can do. We are living in perilous times when the least little thing could unleash devastation that has never been seen before in this world.
