Attorney General Lynn Fitch was our guest speaker this past Monday for Lions Club.
She discussed many of the current issues that her office is dealing with. One of the biggest problems has to do with “human trafficing.” According to Fitch, at least 50 percent of the time there is a family member that is involved and more times that not drugs are the foot of the problem.
The issue has its basis in drug cartels and the monitary value associated with human trafficking is $829 trillion a year. This is using the typical value of $5,000 per individual that is sold into human slavery. Typically, this is for sex trade.
Another issue that the attorney general’s office is actively involved with is equal pay for women. Mississippi is one of the only states that does not currently have that law in place. Again many of the laws are in the state are behind times.
There is a new foster care facility for children under the age of 15 in Jackson and upon opening it was immediately filled. The problem is the adoption laws in the state are archiac and need to be updated so that children do not stay in the foster home system and are placed in better home enviroments in a quicker time frame.
The most recent impactful case she has taken on is referred to as the Dobbs case in which she is attempting to have Roe verses Wade reversed by the Supreme Court.
One of the basic premises of her case it that the court which was appointed by presidents do not have authority to envoke law that responsibility is saved for politicians who are elected to office.
She made her presentation to the court on December 1, 2021. The rest of the nation is waiting to see what the response to case will be. Fitch said that the arguements were two hours in presentation and that the defense was very unenthusiast about thier response. The courst should make their findings public near the end of June or early July. It should be noted that it took a very long period of time to address the issue. Also at issue are the santity of life as well as the health rights of women.
Additionally Finch is working to get Insulin available at a reasonable rate and avialable for the many patients that need that treatment in the State of Mississippi.
Attorney General, Lynn Fitch is working hard for the people of Mississippi to make it a better place to call home.
