Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s unqualified choice to lead the U.S. Department of Defense, has a lot more issues than his apparent difficulty with maintaining sobriety.
He is, however, fooling himself — and anyone else who believes him — when he promises that if the Senate confirms his nomination, he will give up drinking.
Anyone who knows a smidgen about those who struggle with alcohol or other addictive substances knows that it doesn’t work like that. It’s not a habit that a person can just turn off. If it were that easy, Hegseth would have already done so, given the problems that alcohol has caused him.
