T he holiday season has started off with a bang, and we have already had a pretty swell time.
On the opening day of deer season we were in the Delta, and I killed a whopper of a doe. Nancy had worked out a birthday celebration which included a chance to see Papaw. On Saturday morning bright and early I drove up to Tunica from Lula, about 30 miles.
I shot a nice deer about 8 a.m. By 9:00 we were on the cleaning rack. The Bulldogs were facing Arkansas at 11:00 so everything was on schedule. We won the game and it was time to head back to Lula.
That evening we were meeting at Kathryn’s on Moon Lake. William Faulkner used to hang out at Uncle Henry’s, which is next door. All that to say the place is pretty colorful. We had a great meal and laughed at me a bit regarding my kill earlier in the day, which was not really as funny as everyone chose to make it. But if they are laughing at me that gives someone else a break.
We had a great dinner with an Italian flair, which is typical for a lot of the Delta eateries. We called it an early evening because we had to head back home the next morning.
Sunday morning we loaded up and headed to Magee. I did not mention that I have gotten a new farm truck. Not sure if you are familiar with a farm truck--that is one that if you bump something with it, it doesn’t matter much because you can tell where it was hit in all the other bumps and bruises. Monday I turned 57 and it was Thanksgiving week, so all was good.
After a great Thanksgiving meal with friends, we headed to Starkville to watch the Landsharks and Bulldogs play. The game is much the same as watching Magee and Mendenhall. The records go out and whoever is the best team that night walks away victorious. As was the case when Ole Miss beat us this year. We left the game with about 5 minutes left on the clock. The week before it had taken 45 minutes to move 15 feet, and I did not want to experience that again.
We were heading to Oxford for a mini-family reunion. My cousins have started a tradition that they all gather the Friday after Thanksgiving on their farm in Oxford. We did a little shopping before we arrived and I found a character head of a Land Shark. Had to have it so when I drove up to the reunion, I was dressed in maroon with a Land Shark head on. It drew some pretty good laughs.
They had a band that was making the college circuit from the early 70’s so that was a lot of fun. We had a chance to have some good food and visit with some of the folks that we normally only see once a year.
In amongst all the food and fun of the holiday my sweet little wife got me a pole saw for my birthday. I had a chance to run the pole saw so that was really fun. However, if you have not used one before it is not something you can do for an extended period of time. Well at least I can’t because it has a tendency to wear you out.
