Let me set the background for our New Year’s Eve. We were invited by friends to join them in Gulf Shores for New Year’s. We left after work on Thursday.
They had recently bought a condo and, of course, a hurricane hit the coast soon after and did pretty extensive damage to their new digs.
We were looking out over the gulf from the balcony on the 23rd floor when a gust of wind smacks me in the face and blows my glasses off. I watched as they bounced from floor to floor. It was a little strange that I could see them all the way down.
I saw where they landed so my friend and his son went down with me to find the remains of the new glasses that I had worn for all of a week. They had dropped inside a construction zone. I dodged the yellow tape headed to where they had fallen. All of a sudden security officer showed up and told me we can’t be there, but I told him I had lost my glasses and he was good with it.
I told my friend’s son where I thought they were because--without the glasses on--I couldn’t see. They landed exactly where I said and by some miracle they were intact. I was thinking, What are the chances of that happening? Slim and none.
Over the holiday weekend we did the social distancing and wore our masks, but it appeared that most folks were not concerned with social distancing, much less a mask.
My buddy really enjoys cooking so we had some fine food while we were there. The first night we had broiled red fish with crab meat stuffing, all topped off with homemade hollandaise.
On one of the mornings we went out to eat. I enjoyed eggs benedict with a crab cake, all covered with hollandaise and nestled in a bed of spinach. All that good food did not help the waistline, but I am not bothering with a resolution. I am just going to lose some weight. Besides the clothes I bought last year are getting a little snug.
One of the things I would like to accomplish in this new year is to improve my golf game. The son-in-law tells me that stretching is key to developing a better game.
As he explained it, the game is about muscle repetition and getting into the slot. I suppose that is where I am missing out--I have not been in the “slot.” I started doing a little searching over the internet and found all kinds of gadgets you can purchase for a mere $200 or so that will get you in the “slot.”
Of course, you need to purchase the videos that go along with getting in the slot.
But in all honesty, it makes perfect sense to loosen up before you play and stretch muscles. This will also help reduce muscle soreness as well as possible injury.
Regarding Covid-19, I believe in the same way we saw a spike following the Thanksgiving holiday we are in for yet another round. It has already started hitting the week after Christmas and most likely will continue well into 2021. The highest reported figures for the state were between Christmas and New Year’s.
The wife feels that if you are going to catch it you will. I am trying to some extent to be careful in choosing my surroundings and not be in crowds. Most likely, I should not have traveled to the Gulf Coast.
One resolution I will keep is to take the vaccine when it becomes available.
