The Simpson County School board held a work session on Monday to discuss the upcoming school year budget. How this is going to play out is very much up in the air right now because of the pandemic and how state funds can and can not be used.
There will be more definite information in next week’s newspaper because it is a work in process in large part because of the pandemic. The rules on how funds can be spent have yet to be determined. The board does not intend to ask for over a 4 percent increase. More would require a referendum. Based on the economy, however, they decided that an increase of more than 4 percent can be considered.
Remember, however, there is discussion about financing a school bond issue for a consolidated high school.
School Director of Finance Duane Fewell told the board that the next two years could be critical if the state does not allow one time funds to be used for reoccuring expenses.
