Public School are slated to start back next Monday provided that is not a last minute reprieved from either Governor Tate Reeves or the Mississippi Department of Education. Based on the fact that schools around the state are opening this week that reprieve is unlikely to come.
The reason is because the state is not going to get into micro-management of school districts.
Another truth is once school starts there is going to be an outbreak of Covid-19 in our public school systems. No matter what the intentions of the administration and staff are the pandemic is going to hit our school system.
So the key to this is to control the situation as much as possible. It is a must that the schools continue to use best practices.
Even though we are set to come out from under the mask order on August 18. School is scheduled to start on August 17 for students. But think about this would it not be a lot safer to continue to wear mask than not. When we go in public we wear one. Covid-19 is not going to go away on the day the mask order subsides and if it made sense to wear a mask for the past few weeks it makes sense to continue to do so.
After all is a little inconvenience worth the possible prevention of the spread of this disease?
There have been so many thoughts as to what is safe and what is not. It was thought that the warm weather would stop the spread of the disease. It doesn’t get much hotter than it is here right now and we are at an all-time high in regard to cases.
There are those who call for herd immunity. Simply stated is that given long enough exposure our immune system will develop immunity. We are tending to lean this way but there is no way to really know because there is science to either prove or disprove.
Here are a few simple things that we can continue to do that will make us all safer.
-Wear mask in public.
-Social distance when in a group. In Simpson County that means no more than ten inside and twenty outside.
-Clean and sanitize common surfaces.
These rules would have never been implemented if they did not make sense. So continue to observe these guidelines and we will all a lot safer.
The biggest thing and what we all need to realize is that a little inconvenience to make sure our children are safe is well worth the investment.
