Thursday marked the official opening of the new Magee High School Field House.
Almost 100 guests were on hand for the ribbon cutting celebration all of whom were practicing COVID protective measures for the event.
The new facility replaced an outdated field house that was considered old 25 years ago when now School Board President Danny Cowart was the Trojan head coach and won the state championship.
Superintendent Greg Paes stated that this facility would rival any field house of comparable size in the state.
Magee’s Head Coach and Athletic Director Teddy Dyes said this is all about the student atheletes and providing a good environment for them.
Construction on the new facility started in March of 2020. The facility was built by Barnard and Sons of Mendenhall. It is approximately 8,000 square feet with a building cost of approximately $1.2 million dollars. Engineering services were provided by J. H. & H. Engineering firm.
The facility has all new equipment and features Trojan logos as well as gray and red trim. In addition to the weight room, which occupies about half the space, it has a laundry, locker room, training room, new ice machine and other amenities.
Members of the school board as well as former players were on hand for the event that was sponsored by the Magee Chamber of Commerce. Coach Dyes said the students would start using the new facility on Thursday afternoon.
