Last week there was a bit more golf in the mix over the typical week’s offerings.
The Magee Lions Club hosted their annual Mac McCarty Golf Tournament.
Years ago the Lions Club hosted a chicken plate dinner, and every member had to sell ten tickets. As hard as we tried the club never realized more than about $3,000 in profit. But since the event became a golf tournament, it does not require every member to participate and it raises a lot more money for Lions Club projects, which focus primarily on sight issues.
We provide vision testing and sometimes assistance with hearing issues for those who fall below the poverty level and need financial assistance. The club also sponsors youth leadership programs.
While the final numbers are not in, the club should raise in the neighborhood of $7,000 to $8,000 from this year’s tournament because everyone worked hard to recruit players and sponsors. This is not just a snap of the fingers and instant profit. The event is a concerted effort of the membership.
This year John Rankin made a hole-in-one on hole number 3. His group could be heard all around the course as his ball rolled into the cup. Way to go John!
The event was held Thursday afternoon at the Simpson County Country Club. Championship flight winners were Ian, Sam and Danny Cowart. Second place championship went to Rudy Runnels, Charlie Hudson and Dennis Ford. Second flight winners were Wayne Hilton, Mark Ellington and Chris Craft. The second place team from out of town left before photos were taken.
The next event was held Saturday and has been dubbed “Green for the Greens.” Its purpose is to raise money for the country club so they can continue to meet their finacial obligations. Initially, it was to make sure the club could pay their property taxes. Thank goodness things are improving and that was not the most urgent need.
I had heard that the funding helped toward the cost of a new pump for the irriation system. Again, this was a time where a lot of donations were asked for and a lot were received.
As in the Lions Club event, the format for the event was a three-person scramble. Cost for this event with all the extras figured out to $150 per player.
The event started with a great lunch at the club house prepared by Lexi Fortenberry with the great assistance of her mom.
A lot of locals sponsored teams, t. There were six players to each hole with a total of 19 teams for the event.
Winners for Greens event were Charlie Hudson, Kent McCown and Bert Wallace. First flight went to Jerry and Brice McLendon and Amie Green.
