Simpson County public libraries celebrated National Library Week with an appreciation dinner on Thursday evening, April 10, at the Mendenhall Community Center.
Guest speaker was broadcast journalist and author Katina Rankin, who hails from Magee. She spoke primarily of the importance of community public libraries, recalling childhood memories with her sisters at the Magee Library.
In her early adult years Mendenhall Library was her resource, she said, as she pursued her career choices. Rankin wants the current generation and those to come to develop the same kind of memories she has of Simpson County libraries.
“I hope I say something that will challenge you to continue to promote literacy within our community,” Rankin stated.
In her remarks she thanked elected and appointed public officials who were present and reminded them of issues facing libraries including lack of financial resources, budget cuts, adequate staffing, digital literacy gaps, and social/community related challenges. “Library workers do this for the love of children,” she said.
Rankin focused on each of these areas, highlighting the roles that libraries – their staff and resources – play in Simpson County, saying they strengthen communities, transform lives, promote literacy and foster lifelong learning.
“Simply put, libraries must continually adapt to changing community needs and demonstrate their relevance in a world increasingly reliant on digital technologies.”
Her comments were often geared toward public servants in attendance. “Celebrate libraries! Use your offices to promote and support libraries. It costs nothing to tell your constituents about the library,” she explained. Rankin also encouraged them to hold events at their local library, especially in regards to voting.
Rankin concluded her comments stating how libraries benefit students, allowing them an environment in which to engage independently, explore, and promote self directed learning and intellectual curiosity. “Promote library use,” she urged guests and officials. “Engage in library programs and events. Keep raising public awareness.”
The event was catered by Smokey Mountain Grill. Servers were members of the Mendenhall High School National Honor Society.
