Sheriff Paul Mullins reported on Wednesday October 16 at approximately 2:51 p.m., Simpson County E 911 received a report of a bridge collapse. The Strong River Bridge located on Simpson Hwy 149 near D’Lo Water Park had collapsed and several workers had been injured. Simpson County deputies responded to the scene and discovered three workers deceased and at least three more severely injured. EMS and local fire departments were dispatched and began an effort to rescue the injured workers.
The injured were then treated and transported via medical helicopter and ambulance to UMMC. The regional search and rescue taskforce assisted in the recovery of the deceased workers. At approximately 8:45pm the last deceased worker was recovered. At this time the Simpson County Sheriff’s office remained on scene and secured the work site until MDOT and TL Wallace Construction Company could access the accident site.
Mullins said, “Many agencies assisted in this terrible incident, our agency is very grateful to all of the first responders, and the dedicated workers of TL Wallace for all of their efforts that helped to save lives and prevent any further injuries. The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest sympathies and prayers to the families that lost loved ones and we pray for a speedy recovery of the injured of TL Wallace Construction.”
