Students and teachers across the Simpson County School District joined schools nationwide in celebrating Read Across America, a national initiative that promotes literacy and encourages children to discover the joy of reading.
The main theme for Read Across America 2026 was "Create & Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers," with a specific focus for March 2026 being "Champion Kindness," encouraging inclusive books where children see themselves and learn empathy.
Observed each year around March 2, Read Across America is organized by the National Education Association and is recognized as the largest celebration of reading in the United States. The program was launched in 1998 to motivate students of all ages to read and to help build a lifelong love of books and learning.
Today, an estimated 45 million students, educators, and community members participate in events and activities related to the celebration.
Throughout the week, schools in the Simpson County School District participated in a variety of reading-focused activities designed to engage students and highlight the importance of literacy. Teachers, administrators, and guest readers visited classrooms to read aloud to students, while many classes incorporated special themes, dress-up days, and book-related activities to make reading both fun and meaningful.
Community members and local leaders also took part in the celebration, volunteering their time to read to classes and share their favorite books with students. These visits provided an opportunity for students to see the importance of reading beyond the classroom while connecting with leaders in their community.
The goal of Read Across America is simple but powerful—to inspire students to pick up a book and explore new ideas, cultures, and experiences through reading. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of providing students with access to diverse and engaging books that reflect the many stories and perspectives that shape the world.
