JACKSON, Miss. – Treasurer David McRae today announced the State Treasury is returning $5 million in unclaimed money to counties impacted by winter weather. The pro-active Money Match, which represents the largest project of this kind in the state's history, connected 16,000 Mississippians with previously lost funds. Should Mississippians receive a check, their only responsibility is to cash it.
"Mississippians are no strangers to natural disaster," said McRae. "But we're strong, we're resilient, and we come together as neighbors. While the State Treasury can't repair power lines or send clean-up crews, we can make sure that as many citizens as possible receive their missing money with ease. For the areas affected, this is a $5 million economic stimulus at a time when our neighbors need it most."
These funds do not replace state or federal disaster aid. Please continue to pursue any benefits you are entitled to. If a Mississippian receives the check, they are encouraged to cash it immediately. This is your money being returned to you.
Unclaimed money is cash, stocks, or other financial assets that an owner has lost track of. When financial institutions fail to find the rightful owner over a period of five years, the funds are sent to the state to return. Since taking office, McRae has returned more than $170 million - more than all other Mississippi Treasurers combined. To search for unclaimed money, please visit treasury.ms.gov/search.
