JACKSON, MS – A new analysis reveals that the House Republican plan would strip essential health care and food assistance from Mississippi’s most vulnerable residents, cutting Medicaid by $880 billion and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by $230 billion. Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1% of Americans would receive $1.1 trillion in tax cuts, exacerbating economic inequality in our state and across the nation.
These cuts would have dire consequences for Mississippi, where nearly 684,000 residents rely on Medicaid for critical health care services. Many of these beneficiaries are children, seniors, and people with disabilities who would face increased medical costs and reduced access to care. Additionally, thousands of Mississippi families depend on SNAP to put food on the table. The proposed $230 billion reduction in SNAP funding would disproportionately impact low-income households, leading to greater food insecurity in communities that are already struggling.
“Taking health care and food assistance away from working families, seniors, and children just to fund tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy is both immoral and economically unsound,” said Chairman Cheikh Taylor. “Mississippi already has some of the highest poverty and food insecurity rates in the country. These cuts will only make things worse, forcing families to make impossible choices between medical care and putting food on the table.”
The tax cuts outlined in the plan primarily benefit individuals with annual incomes of $743,000 or more. While the wealthiest 1% receive massive tax breaks, working-class and middle-income Mississippians would be left to bear the burden of slashed public services, increasing inequality and deepening financial hardship across the state.
Mississippi residents, advocates, and policymakers must take action to oppose these devastating cuts. Investing in health care and nutrition programs strengthens families, supports local economies, and ensures a healthier, more prosperous future for all Mississippians—not just the wealthiest few.
