After 30 years in education “Coach” Terrell Luckey looks at his new position as a chance to give back to the shools and really make a difference.
Luckey is back at his alma mater as principal of Magee Middle School, having graduated from the Magee schools himself.
Upon graduating from Magee High School, Luckey attended CoLin and completed his bachelor of science in secondary education, science and physical education at Millsaps College. He went on to complete his master’s degree at William Carey.
He returned to Magee Middle School for four years under his mentor, Earnest Jaynes, where he taught science and coached football. From there he headed to Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Then he returned to Mount Olive High School to teach and serve as head football coach for five years.
He returned to Magee Middle School as assistant principal for three years before becoming principal for three years.
Luckey then took the position as head football coach at Magee High School. During his tenure he was able to coach his son Nick and become active in his daughter Allie’s band activities. He said being head coach for Magee had always been a goal of his.
He then made a few other stops before returning to again lead Magee Middle School this school year with 30 years of educational experience to back him up.
Luckey says he is excited to be in the job, adding, “My momma lives three blocks from here and this is where I went to school as did my wife and children.”
He said, “One of my goals is to give the people that come to Magee a quality place to send their students.”
Luckey said he and his staff are implementing a program which is in place at the other schools, PBI, Positive Behavior Intervention. He said the idea is to reward positive behavior and stress that more than the negative. He smiled and said, “I still have a paddle but at the same time I would rather not use it.”
He said, “We are like other schools and have our problems, but the positives outweigh the negatives.”
He explained that many of the teachers who were at Magee Middle during his earlier tenure are still there, which will be a great positive.
He said that discipline issues will be dealt with when they arise and that he is confident in his staff.
He said, “Our Trojans will be the pride of Magee.”
