While December is not officially recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, many domestic violence programs run special campaigns during the 12th month, as survivors may face heightened danger and isolation during the holidays.
These efforts often focus on sharing hotline numbers, safety-planning tips and reminders to check in on friends and family who may be at risk.
Because of these increased risks, many advocates treat December and the broader holiday season as a critical time for awareness and safety outreach.
One such advocate, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Rho Iota Zeta Chapter, did just that by hosting a “Purple Christmas,” a community service initiative aimed at supporting survivors of domestic violence and strengthening local outreach efforts.
“We are grateful for 20 years of partnership with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Rho Iota Zeta Chapter. Their ‘Purple for Christmas’ observance powerfully highlights domestic violence awareness and support for survivors,” said Angel Wings Executive Director Wendy Seals.
Rho Iota Zeta Chapter was joined by Zeta Amicae, Zeta Youth, and the Zeta Male Network to support Angel Wings in Mendenhall. Angel Wings is a local organization dedicated to protecting and restoring survivors of domestic violence.
“The effort was designed to provide both practical assistance and emotional encouragement to individuals affected by domestic violence,” said Rho Iota Zeta Vice President Delwyn Greene. “The initiative served as a reminder to survivors that they are not alone and that community support remains available during the holiday season and beyond.”
In that spirit, the chapter presented toiletry baskets to assist with immediate personal-care needs and made a $1,000 monetary donation to support Angel Wings’ ongoing programs and services.
Multiple studies and advocacy organizations report that police interventions and calls related to domestic violence typically rise in December compared with other months, often by 20 percent or more. Contributing factors include financial stress related to holiday spending, increased alcohol use, intense family gatherings, and pressure to “keep up appearances” rather than seek help.
“Angel Wings Out-Reach Center deeply values our 20-year partnership with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Rho Iota Zeta Chapter. Their ‘Purple for Christmas’ celebration reflects a meaningful commitment to raising awareness about domestic violence.”
