The Simpson Academy Cougars defeated the Lamar Raiders 29-21 last Friday.
The Cougars took an early lead midway through the first quarter following an errant snap that resulted in a safety. Barret McKenney scored the first touchdown of the game pushing the Cougars’ lead to 9-0 following the PAT.
The Raiders rallied and sustained a drive that ended in a rushing touchdown from four yards out, trimming the score to 9-7. The Cougars answered with a 47 yard TD pass to Chanse Funchess on the next drive. It was a well placed ball from McKenney and helped extend the lead to 15-7. The Raiders responded again, cutting into the lead making the score 14-15.
Both offenses were playing at a high level, and with under a minute left in the first half the Cougars were able to drive down the field and score with 14.6 seconds left on the clock. The Cougars took a 22-14 lead into halftime. The Cougars never trailed in the game and played complimentary football to secure a 29-21 victory and remain undefeated. The Cougars will be on the road this week to face MRA.
