The Simpson County Falcons faced off against the Poplarville Hornets this weekend. Just wished true fall weather would get here.
The Falcon
Tinamites (5-6 yrs) got things started off first. After the Hornets won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, the Falcons began on their own 20 yard line. First play from scrimmage Aiden Reed ran for 45 yards only to have it negated on a holding penalty. If it worked once why not try again, and thanks to a great block by fullback JaMorris Byrd, Reed broke free for a 60 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Atilla Powell added the PAT. Falcons led early 8-0.
The Hornets would answer on their first possession driving the length of the field for a touchdown. PAT was good and the score tied 8-8 early in the second quarter. The Falcons would drop the ball and the Hornets recovered the fumble. The Hornets then capitalized on the turnover and scored once again. The score at half-time was Hornets 16 and the Falcons 8.
The Hornets started the second half on offense. The Falcon defense held up on this drive and took over late in the 3rd quarter. However, the drive stalled and the Falcons were forced to punt. Poplarville added more points midway into the 4th quarter. The score of Hornets 24 and Falcons 8 would hold up as time expired on the Falcon drive.
The Falcon
Rookies (7-8 yrs) would once again be in a defensive struggle this week, both sides countering each other’s offense. Late in the 3rd quarter, the Hornets would break free on a 35 yard touchdown. The PAT was good and the Hornets lead 8-0 going into the 4th quarter. This score would hold up for the Hornets as both defenses stopped the others’ offensive attacks.
Standouts this week for the Rookies were Bryson Caffie, Ja'Marius Jenkins, and Lane Purser.
The Falcon
Midgets (9-10yrs) were once again firing on all cylinders. The defense completely shut down the Hornet offense. Brady Fairchild led the charge on defense.
The Falcon offense moved the ball at will. Strong running by Eddie Weathersby and Ty Davis were just too much for the Hornets. The final score 36-0 Falcons. The Midgets remain undefeated.
The Falcon
Peewees (11-12 yrs) had a double challenge this week: In their first game against Poplarville the Falcons got off to a slow start in the first game with the Hornets but turned the heat up quickly. Brayden Gregory led the offensive charge in both games in the air and on the ground. At half-time the Falcons led 24-0.
The Hornets would manage to score late in the 3rd quarter, but the Falcon defense denied the extra point. The Falcons would go on to score two more times, bringing the final score to 38-6.
In the second match-up against the Bobcats of Sumrall, the Falcons would take charge from start to finish. The defense pitched a shutout, though the Bobcat defense made it a little tougher for the Falcon offense to move the ball, holding the potent Falcon offense to 3 scores. The final score 22-0. Standouts for both games: Brayden Gregory, Cameron Smith, Henry Funches Jr., Cody Mosely, Joel Robinson and Tyler Walker.
Next week the Falcons face Forrest County.
