The Magee Trojans battled the Jefferson County Cougars last Friday but still lost a close game 27-30.
The Trojans matched the Tigers in every facet of the game. The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the entire game. Big plays from Ken Porter and Jeremiah Cole kept the game close and gave the Trojans an opportunity to win late in the game. Kendarious Porter led the Trojans in rushing with 21 carries for 142 yards. Jeremiah Cole tallied three receptions for 79 yards.
Special teams and turnovers made the difference in the close game, and the Trojans fell short. However the growth the team demonstrated as the season progressed is promising for the future of the program.
A few statements from the coaches: Head Coach Chase Courtney stated that the boys battled and the conditions were tough, but the boys knew that they were going to play a really good team at their place.
Courtney said that the kickoff team was behind in the field positions all night and that they gave Jefferson County great starting field positions, and that made it tough for the defense. He also mentioned that it stings when you lose by three points and you start second guessing yourself, thinking if plays could have been different, but the truth is, a lot of plays could have been different. Coach Courtney said “Kendarious Porter is tough, and Jeremiah Cole is instant electricity whenever we can get him the ball and we try to do that a lot.”
Courtney said the team fought and didn't finish where they wanted, but he is proud of them and their growth from the past few weeks. He added that nobody thought that the Trojans would compete in the second round “but I'm proud of that. “
Defensive Coordinator Jarrod Milloy said, “The guys really played hard the whole game, but unfortunately they didn't get the result we wanted; but not taking any credit from Jefferson County, they made plays to be successful in certain areas.”
Coach Milloy says all in all he is proud of the fight and resilience that the team showed these last couple of weeks.
Starting out the season 0-4 very few people thought that we would still be playing at this juncture of the season but the Trojans knew that they were capable of.
Milloy said, “I am proud of how they stuck together and were able to have success at the end of the season.”
