The Magee Trojans and Mendenhall Tigers will meet in the Simpson County Super Bowl for their 100th matchup this Friday at the Tiger Den starting at 7 p.m.
The Tigers are entering the game after winning their home opener 18-10 over Hazlehurst. The Tigers have won the Super Bowl for the last three seasons in dominating fashion.
The game will serve as the first road game for the Trojans, who are hungry and looking to make a statement after an impressive 26-13 win over West Lauderdale to start the season. Magee leads the overall series with 49 wins compared to Mendenhall’s 48. There have only been two ties.
The rivalry is nearly even and has produced some of the greatest games in Mississippi sports history. Many citizens from Simpson County can share stories of overflowing stadiums filled with electrifying energy during a Simpson County Super Bowl. They tell stories of how it was generally the last game of the regular season and records meant nothing. The Tigers and Trojans brought their “A” game and left everything on the field. The game is earlier in the season now due to district scheduling, but it still means a lot to the community.
Both teams have been successful in recent years with the Trojans winning the 3A State Championship in 2020 and the Tigers having ample playoff success including a South State Championship recently. With great talent on both teams, this Friday should produce another memorable game for football fans.
Over the years the two schools have extended their rivalry to helping those in need and partnered with Mississippi Blood Services to host the Simpson County Blood Bowl. Students and faculty members from each school compete to see who can donate the most blood to Mississippi Blood Services. Both schools’ effort in the competition has been amazing. The student response over the years has been inspiring, and the schools have been able to do a lot of good in the community.
The rivalry will turn one century old this Friday — half as old as Simpson County itself. The stadium is expected to be packed once again this Friday night in Mendenhall, and you will not want to miss it!
