The City of Magee is mourning the loss of former Mayor Dale Berry, who passed away this week due to heart complications. He had been hospitalized at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and was awaiting a heart transplant. His passing has deeply touched the community, leaving behind a profound sense of loss among all who knew and respected him as a dedicated public servant and a proud supporter of Magee.
A 1975 graduate of Magee High School, Berry went on to earn degrees from Co-Lin Community College and Millsaps College. He worked for nine years as a teacher and coach before entering the business world, where he and his brother managed their family business founded in 1953, employing about 30 people. His diverse professional background gave him a unique understanding of both the people and the economic pulse of Magee.
Berry served as mayor for twelve years, during which the city experienced financial stability, consistent development, and no tax increases. First elected in 2013, he took a hands-on leadership style and unwavering commitment to Magee’s growth and well-being. His administration prioritized fiscal responsibility, while also maintaining a strong connection to the needs and concerns of the local population.
On June 16, 2025, a retirement reception was held at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center to honor Berry and longtime Alderman Patrick Brown. The event featured tributes from former Mayor Jimmy Clyde and other city leaders who praised Berry’s years of service. His son, Brentley Berry, presented him with a commemorative plaque, and the room was filled with community members offering prayers and support for his health as he prepared for a heart transplant.
Earlier in the year, Berry announced that he would not seek re-election due to his declining health. In a heartfelt statement, he thanked the people of Magee for their support and assured them that he would continue to serve faithfully until his final day in office. At his last board meeting on June 30, the community gathered in prayer for him, a moment that reflected the deep respect he had earned during his time as mayor.
Many residents admired his strength and honesty in the face of these trials, viewing him as a leader who never wavered in his dedication to the city he loved. Berry’s tenure was marked by a strong sense of community pride. He was a visible presence at local events, a supporter of the local school, and a champion of small-town values.
Former Mayor Jimmy Clyde recalled Berry’s decision to build a life in Magee, raising a family and choosing to stay rooted in the community rather than pursue other opportunities. His legacy is one of stability, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service. Berry’s leadership helped shape Magee into the city it is today, and his influence will continue to be felt by future generations. As Magee begins a new chapter, it does so with gratitude for a man who gave his all for his hometown. Dale Berry is survived by his family and a community that will forever remember his service, leadership, and love for Magee.
Plans for public tributes or memorial services are expected to be announced soon, as the city joins together to honor a leader who truly made a difference.
