The City of Magee is mourning the loss of former Mayor Dale Berry, who passed away this week due to heart complications. A 1975 graduate of Magee High School, Berry went on to earn degrees from Co-Lin Community College and Millsaps College. He worked for nine years as a teacher and coach before entering the business world, where he and his brother managed their family business founded in 1953, employing about 30 people. His diverse professional background gave him a unique understanding of both the people and the economic pulse of Magee.
Berry served as mayor for twelve years, during which the city experienced financial stability, consistent development, and no tax increases. First elected in 2013, he took a hands-on leadership style and unwavering commitment to Magee’s growth and well-being. His administration prioritized fiscal responsibility, while also maintaining a strong connection to the needs and concerns of the local population.
On June 16, 2025, a retirement reception was held at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center to honor Berry and longtime Alderman Patrick Brown. The event featured tributes from former Mayor Jimmy Clyde and other city leaders who praised Berry’s years of service. His son, Brentley Berry, presented him with a commemorative plaque, and the room was filled with community members offering prayers and support for his health as he prepared for a heart transplant.
Earlier in the year, Berry announced that he would not seek re-election due to his declining health. In a heartfelt statement, he thanked the people of Magee for their support and assured them that he would continue to serve faithfully until his final day in office. At his last board meeting on June 30, the community gathered in prayer for him, a moment that reflected the deep respect he had earned during his time as mayor.
