Children and adults alike enjoyed Move to Learn (M2L) Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at the Mendenhall Public Library as part of their summer reading program.
A near capacity crowd in the community center adjacent to the library learned about brain breaks, silent ovations, and all kinds of movement to aid students in an educational environment.
Lead by Coach Larry Calhoun of M2L everyone danced, clapped, stomped, boxed, and performed jumping jacks all with huge grins and lots of laughter. Calhoun commented that this was one of his largest groups to date, that typically there are only 15-20 kids in attendance during the summer. Calhoun also visits Mississippi schools throughout the academic year with presentations on the benefit of Move to Learn.
According to program flyers only five minutes of M2L in a classroom can “refocus students when energy is high; relieve anxiety before tests; and help meet student movement requirements.” The program was begun in 2012 when the MS Department of Education asked Calhoun to implement this program statewide. He has been with it ever since.
