The Simpson Academy Cougars saw their season come to a close Friday night with a 27-14 loss to the Brookhaven Academy Cougars in the first round of the MAIS Division 3 playoffs.
Despite a strong effort on both sides of the ball, Simpson couldn’t overcome a few key turnovers and a fast start by Brookhaven.
Brookhaven struck early, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cougars tied the game after a blocked punt by Jacob Coulson was recovered in the endzone by Hayes Algee for a touchdown. Brookhaven Academy answered early in the second quarter, ending their drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass taking a 14-7 lead with 9:31 left in the half. Coulson continuing his phenomenal season scoring a 5-yard rushing touchdown for the Cougars in the final two minutes of the first half to even the game at 14-14. This would be the last score of the season for the Cougars.
Brookhaven put together a final scoring drive in the first half and converted a field goal to take 17-14 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Simpson continued to fight, keeping the game within reach, but Brookhaven’s defense held firm, forcing critical stops late in the fourth quarter. Brookhaven’s balanced attack sealed the win after scoring 10 points in the third quarter and holding on to the lead as time expired.
Although the loss ends Simpson’s playoff run, the Cougars showed grit and growth throughout the season. After facing one of the toughest schedules in their division, Simpson finished with several close contests that reflected the team’s resilience and potential. The Cougars battled through adversity, improved week by week, and set a solid foundation for the future.
As the offseason begins, Simpson Academy will look to build on this year’s experience. With a strong core of returning players and valuable lessons learned, the Cougars have every reason to be optimistic. The work put in during the coming months will shape a team ready to return stronger and more determined when the next season kicks off.
