The Cougars struggled to find their footing at the start of the game due to some miscues on defense and offense. However, they were able to hold Lamar to 7 points through the first quarter.
The Cougar defense played well, getting a good push at the line of scrimmage from Eli Brewer and others. They came up with big plays including an interception by Chanse Funchess and a forced fumble by Chase Adcock recovered by Ethan Durr.
The Cougars had opportunities early in the second quarter and capitalized. Following the fumble recovery, Barret McKenney led the offense onto the field and did much of the heavy lifting on the Cougars’ first scoring drive. McKenney broke for a 45-yard run moving the Cougars inside the red zone. Hayes Berry punched in the touchdown to bring the game to even following a Parker Pierce extra point.
Lamar answered with a deep pass on a third and long to move them to the 2-yard line. Lamar scored two plays later on offense, and then capitalized on a turnover on the next possession to push the score to 21-7 heading into halftime.
The game was still competitive through the fourth quarter, but the Cougars were struggling with turnovers down the stretch. They scored again late in the fourth quarter on a tough rushing touchdown by Ethan Nations.
It was a tough game, but the Cougars competed hard until the end.
The Cougars will face Copiah Academy this Friday at home as they celebrate Senior Night.
