Lawana Thompson will be the Alderwoman for Magee Ward 2 after a narrow victory over Joe Worrell according to unofficial results. A total of 93 ballots were cast which included 82 election day votes, 7 absentee ballots, and 4 affidavits. The race was tied at 41 to 41 after counting election day votes on Tuesday August 15. The remaining votes were taken to the Simpson County Circuit Clerk’s Office for verification.
City Clerk John Styron explained that while speaking with officials from the Secretary of States Offices they advised that the seven absentee ballots would all be rejected, because there was no way to verify the signatures. Also, two of the four affidavit ballots were rejected because the addresses were outside of Ward 2, leaving only two ballots to be counted.
Thompson received both valid ballots making her the unofficial winner. Lawana Thompson received 43 votes and Joe Worrell received 41. Results are unofficial and have yet to be certified.
