The Mendenhall Mayoral Council will host a blood drive this Friday, December 10, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The Mississippi Blood Services bus will be parked outside the Mendenhall Community Center next to the Mendenhall Public Library. All donors will receive a $15 Visa card. Donors can schedule a time to donate online at https://www.mbsonline.us/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/17422
Alderwoman Janna Miller has headed the council since its inception. The Mayor's Health Council is a partnership with municipalities to establish coalitions governed by the Mayor's Office with the responsibility for creating healthy environments.
The environments are established through policy and environmental system changes which support increased access to physical activity, healthy foods and reduced exposure to tobacco smoke. The Mayor's Council works to reduce the prevalence of heart disease and stroke, and to engage key stakeholders to enact policies which support the reduction of risk factors for heart disease and stroke. The initiative was first started in the Delta, and is now beginning to spread state wide. The council also focuses on creating environments to promote good mental health.
She explained that this is the first of many events that the council has planned. Miller said the council is currently working on a job fair to help educate the citizens of Mendenhall of the many available employment opportunities.
She said, “This is going to be a good thing and will help connect our citizens to resources that they didn’t know were there. We will be able to tap into these resources and take advantage of several opportunities.”
Miller is encouraging everyone to attend the blood drive this Friday, and the job fair in the near future.
