The town of D’Lo held its Bicentennial Celebration Saturday, June 1, with the theme of “A Day of Remembrance.” About 200 people attended.
It began in the Methodist Church with comments from local dignitaries, a video presentation of an MPB documentary Homefront to the Battlefront Mississippi World War II and brief skits based on the history of D’Lo. From that point the program moved to the Community Center, where guest of honor Pat Irwin was recognized as the Town Historian.
James Harper provided real and thought provoking comments as well about the men serving in World War II. “Not only the men on this side of the tracks answered the call, the other side of the tracks answered the call. I’m so proud that individuals like Mr. Davis has said we don’t see color but we understand there are differences. You look at me and I look at you in a little different light.”
He continued that if those in the middle could change their ways and be more accepting of others, “I found we can make this place a better place than it is.” He thanked the crowd for the opportunity to speak and was met with a rousing round of applause.
