Bryan Green with the Magee Police Department was recently selected as interim Chief of Police by the Magee Board of Aldermen.
Green, 41 and a Magee native, wants the position full time.
Green graduated from Magee High School in 2001 and joined the United States Army. “I can remember as a kid I knew that’s what I wanted to do. When I graduated high school I was too young to be a police officer so I joined the military. When I got out I went to work for the Sheriff’s Department, and then came here.” He served eight years active duty and two years in the National Guard.
Former Sheriff Kenneth Lewis gave Green his start in law enforcement. He then joined the Magee PD in 2017, starting out as a patrolman on nightshift under former Chief Randy Crawford and working his way up to investigator.
Green believes he was chosen as interim for several reasons. “I’ve been here through a lot of things; I know the ins and outs of the department. Everybody here now was hired after I got here, so I know all the officers. I’ve been the investigator for the last several years. I’ve been offered several jobs; I do not want to leave the Magee Police Department. I love it here!”
Green is married with six children and a granddaughter.
Because of his experience Green has already begun thinking about goals he would pursue for the police department. “We’ve had a kind of high turnover rate here the past few years; that’s one thing I really want to try to fix. I want to get people here that are from here and stay here. That’s a law enforcement problem everywhere. People come, they’ll stay a couple years, and then they’ll go on to something else.
“We’re a small town; everybody knows everybody. That’s what I want for our officers, to be a part of the community and know everybody. I think that’s very important for a police department to be ingrained with the community.” Green would also push community outreach and visibility of police officers.
When asked if he would stay on if not chosen for the position Green responded, “If they were to pick someone else that’s more qualified than me and a better fit, I would 100 percent stay.”
“We’re here to help, serve and protect the community. If we can make the community better, it helps the whole city. And it makes our job easier too.”
