The Magee Trojans not only punched their ticket to the second round, but they also drove the train as they ran through the Jefferson County Tigers in a 47-6 victory last Friday. It was an easy night for the Trojans as expected. The team has faced Jefferson County several times within the last few years, all resulting in wins.
The Trojans got production from every back in their running back committee. Braeden Gregory led the way with seven carries for 93 yards and a touchdown. Jawon Shaw turned in a similar performance with 9 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. Both backs averaged more than 10 yards a carry. James Floyd added six carries for 48 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line did an excellent job opening running lanes and winning the line of scrimmage.
The Trojans dominated on the ground limiting the need for quarterback Tristan Newsome to pass. Newsome completed 5 of 11 pass attempts for 104 yards and a touchdown. Kyerston Tucker led all receivers with two receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. He was followed by Jaylen Floyd, who finished with three receptions for 35 yards.
The Trojan defense was aggressive and dominated from start to finish. They frequently made plays in the backfield, and recorded 16 tackles for a loss. Senior linebackers Cameron Floyd, Jody Durr, and Jameyian Spencer played up to their standards. Floyd finished the game with 12 tackles followed by Durr with 11, and Spencer with 9. Durr, Floyd and Ty’Darius Owens each recorded a sack. They got excellent play from defensive linemen Jamaal Dinkins, Chris Dinkins, Jacoby Bridges, Josh Keyes, and Jaylen Hicks, who combined for 22 tackles, and kept the linebackers clean for most of the night. The Trojans forced five turnovers and blocked a punt in their 47-6 victory.
Everything went according to plan for the Trojans last Friday, but as most of the returning players know the road ahead only gets more difficult. The Trojans are set to face off against the undefeated Enterprise Bulldogs this Friday. The Bulldogs have scored over 42 points in each of their last three games while limiting their opponents to 14 or fewer.
The same can be said about the Trojans, who have scored 47 or more in their last three games while holding their opponents to 10 or fewer. The Trojans will look to have an edge with several players on the team with championship experience. It should be an exciting matchup between two high powered offenses and a pair of stingy defenses. The game will played in on the road at Enterprise this Friday.
