Infrastructure and public works issues were a major focus of the Magee Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting held on Tuesday, January 20.
Two local businessmen, Joey Boyles and Odell Gray, owners of septic system companies in Magee, appeared before the board to discuss a sewage dumping agreement with the city. Boyles spoke on behalf of both men, with Gray expressing agreement. After extended discussion, the board tabled the matter for further review.
An amended lease agreement for hay cutting at the Magee Airport was approved. A preview day for interested parties is scheduled for January 31, from 8–11 a.m.
Forrest Dungan of Clearpoint Engineering addressed the board regarding NRCS erosion project grants. Dungan stated that there is no set timeline until grants are finalized. He added that the city is waiting on Southern Paving for a final pay application, noting that not all punch list items were completed.
Dungan said that Magee will not use Southern Paving on future projects.
Public Works Director Tim Bray reported the city’s lift pump station has been restored but additional serious issues were discovered during repairs. Bray described a deteriorating bottom 35 feet deep with an eight-foot diameter hole. He requested assistance from Dungan to help address the issue. According to Mayor Mark Grubbs, "To clarify, the hole would be approximately 35' deep and eight feet diameter of the lift station itself." Additionally, the hole does not run beneath the city, the sewer line does. Bray stated, "That controls all the sewer from the railroad tracks this side all the way from one end of town to the other." We apologize for the confusion.
While the city is still awaiting approval for the purchase of a new garbage truck, the board approved advertising for three weeks for a used garbage truck with approximately 60,000 miles at a lower cost, pending review by City Attorney Wesla Sullivan.
Airport Manager David Moore was unable to attend the meeting due to illness.
