The Mendenhall Mayor and Board of Aldermen honored the Diamond Youth Softball 18U World Series Champions at their recent August meeting.
Program director Duane Fewell presented the board with a canvas picture of the team and a softball signed by the players. These girls were the first team in Mendenhall history to win the World Series. The board and Mayor signed a proclamation honoring the team for their accomplishments.
In other business, Janice Skiffer appeared before the board requesting the use of the civic center at no charge to host a “Parents are the First Teachers” workshop. The board unanimously approved the request.
All board minutes and financial statements were approved. The board reviewed the 2024-2025 budget and made no changes. A budget hearing has been scheduled for August 27 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
The city is continuing to work on the water and sewer project on the frontage road. The board voted to adopt a MDEQ MOU modification request for the water and sewer project.
Ricky Hall appeared before the board for a discussion on vehicles on the right-of-way at 314 South Main Street, but no action was taken. The board also discussed drain lines at 911 East Street. The situation was tabled to allow City Attorney Wesley Broadhead to research the matter.
Property clean up was discussed as the board reviewed properties at 229 Revere Circle owned by Daryn Williams and 221 Mose Street owned by Cornelius Williams.
A public hearing was held on three properties. The first was for 501 North Main Street owned by Tina Hutton. The property was declared a nuisance to the city and unsafe, and the board moved to clean up the property. The board moved to cut the grass at two properties, 505 East Street owned by Chris Shots and 208 North Congress Street owned by Justin Ducksworth. They will have their grass cut and charges will be assessed to their taxes.
The board accepted the donation of a 2004 F-150 pickup truck to the Mendenhall Fire Department from the town of D’Lo.
The board approved officer Michael Schuler to register and attend the fulltime police academy. Chief Candy McCullum presented a post officer involved shooting policy and body worn camera policy that are being reviewed by the city attorney.
Dates were approved to readvertise for bids on the water and sewer project through August 15. Payments were approved to Central Pipe Supply and Griner Drilling Services for repairs to the water system along with three payments to Fire Equipment Services for various fire department needs.
The board entered executive session to discuss personnel before adjourning the meeting.
The city budget hearing will be held on Tuesday, August 27, at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
