Sammy Byther was arrested on October 31 and charged with two counts of sexual battery following a probable cause hearing that was held on Oct. 30 at the 13th district circuit court.
This arrest stems from an October 5 complaint made by a student at Mendenhall High School alleging inappropriate communication between the student and Byther, who was the school’s wrestling coach and was in a position of authority.
The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating this complaint, and evidence has been brought forward to support at least two counts of Sexual Battery against Byther.
After the probable cause hearing, a warrant was issued for Byther and he turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sammy Byther was housed at the Simpson County Adult Detention Center while awaiting his initial appearance in Simpson County Justice Court. Following his initial appearance, bond was set for Byther at $1 million per count for a total of $2 million.
Simpson County School District Superintendent Dr. Paul Lawrence released the following statement: "Simpson County School District is committed to the safety and well-being of all students and has zero tolerance for any behavior that compromises their security.
