The Simpson County Board of Supervisors covered a wide range of county business during its regular meeting held Feb. 2, addressing road projects, personnel matters, financial approvals and citizen concerns.
County Engineer Greg Bonds provided a brief update on state aid road projects, noting that work remains underway but progress has been slowed due to weather conditions that have not been conducive to laying asphalt. Bonds said he will give the board another update at its next meeting.
Shawn Wildman appeared before the board on behalf of homeowners on Hidden Acres Lane to request assistance with road maintenance. Wildman explained that the five property owners on the road have held multiple meetings and workdays to maintain the road themselves and are asking the county to eventually absorb it. She also requested help with materials, including rock, to assist with ongoing maintenance. Wildman added that future easements should result in viable roads for property owners.
Board Attorney Danny Welch noted that the primary concern in taking over the road is the presence of the Gulf South Pipeline, which encroaches near the back of the roadway, and coordination with the company would be required. Supervisor Charles Westmoreland said he had personally inspected the road and found it to be in good condition. Board President Wayne Womack stated that the process of taking over the road is underway and that property owners will be kept informed.
In other road-related business, Road Manager Jeremy Bolton was approved to declare a MowerMax and its attachments as surplus property, with plans to sell the equipment to Lamar County.
The board approved Sheriff Paul Mullins’ request to hire Guy Kevin Morrow as a part-time employee at the Simpson County Jail.
Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer presented surrendered tag reports for January, along with solid waste reports and updates to real and personal property changes for 2025.
County Administrator Charlie Welch presented a full agenda of administrative items. The board approved sending a letter to the owner of 1808 Old Pearl Road regarding excessive garbage blowing into the public right of way and neighboring private property. Supervisors also ratified a letter of support for the South Central Community Action Agency as it seeks funding for its 2026 and 2027 operating years.
Financial approvals included accepting the lowest bid from Trustmark to refinance a 2022 Cat 140GC Motor Grader at an interest rate of 3.9 percent, as well as approving property and casualty insurance coverage through MASIT in the amount of $279,523.12.
The board acknowledged an agreement between the University of Southern Mississippi and the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office establishing guidelines for internships for students in criminal justice, forensic science and security programs.
Board Attorney Danny Welch presented a denial of liability letter for the board’s approval, and Daniel Ferguson presented a utility use permit for AT&T, which was approved.
Supervisors entered executive session to discuss professional services and litigation before adjourning the meeting.
