The Magee Trojans and Mendenhall Tigers will meet in the Simpson County Super Bowl this Friday at the Trojan Field starting at 7 p.m.
The Tigers are entering the game after losing their home opener 13-21 in a hard fought game against Ridgeland. They lost the Super Bowl last season 8-0 after dominating the three seasons prior. The Tigers will look to get back to their winning ways this Friday against their century old rival, the Magee Trojans.
The game will serve as the home opener for the Trojans, who are hungry and looking to make a statement after an impressive 16-0 win over the Mount Olive Pirates to start the season. Magee leads the overall series with 50 wins compared to Mendenhall’s 48. There have only been two ties. The nearly even rivalry has produced some of the greatest games in Mississippi sports history. Many Simpson County citizens can share stories of overflowing stadiums filled with electrifying energy during a Simpson County Super Bowl. They tell stories of how it was generally the last game of the regular season and records meant nothing. The Tigers and Trojans brought their “A” game and left everything on the field. The game is earlier in the season now due to district scheduling, but it still means a lot to the communities.
Both teams have been successful in recent years with the Trojans playing in the 3A South State Championship game last season and the Tigers having ample playoff success recently. With great talent on both teams, this Friday should produce another memorable game for football fans.
Over the years the two schools have extended their rivalry to helping those in need and partnered with Mississippi Blood Services to host the Simpson County Blood Bowl. Students and faculty members from each school compete to see who can donate the most blood to MBS. The student response over the years has been inspiring, and the schools have been able to do a lot of good in the community.
The rivalry will turn 101 years old this Friday — half as old as Simpson County itself. A packed stadium is expected once again this Friday night in Magee, and you will not want to miss it!
