The Magee Consolidated-McLaurin Vocational Attendance Center Historical Society is asking volunteers to show up for work and make their day off a day of service on Monday, January 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The organization is seeking volunteers to help with the restoration of the old Magee Elementary Gymnasium and one of the classroom buildings. The service day will begin at 9 a.m. Leaders of clubs, organizations, teams, and alumni are encouraged to make this a project for their members.
The Magee Consolidated-McLaurin Vocational Attendance Center Historical Society was organized as a nonprofit and exists to bring history alive for the youth and elderly.
The organization has worked to preserve and exhibit materials from over 70 years ago. The plan for the old Magee Elementary School, which was formerly the McLaurin Vocational Attendance Center, is to have it declared a historical site and museum.
After the building is restored, there are plans to display artifacts, pictures, school annuals, and other materials to honor board members, teachers, students, and community leaders of the past. Many of these individuals are deceased, but their mem+ory and hard work will be highlighted as part of the museum.
Along with honoring the past, another goal of the organization is to play a role in helping future generations. Plans are for the gym to be used as an activity center for the children of the community. Other programs will be offered to include mentorship programs for at-risk youth, educational services to include tutoring, after school, college prep, and GED services. Job preparation services, life skills training, and agricultural skills will also be taught.
The first step is to get the building restored, and the historical society is asking for help from the community to move the project forward.
