The Mendenhall Tigers played a hard fought game against the Louisville Wildcats, but fell just short of victory with a final score of 20-28. In a state championship rematch from two seasons ago, the Tigers were eager to make a statement.
The Tigers started the game slowly in the first quarter, allowing Louisville to jump out to a quick 14-0 lead. After settling into the game, the defense began making plays and the offense found a rhythm. Princeton Miller, Bubba Drennan, Jeremy Butts, Kendelll Walker and Eddie Weathersby helped shore up the defense. However it was Jaiwon Williams with a breakout performance that helped spark a comeback for the Tigers.
Williams swung momentum in his team’s favor in the second quarter with an interception on defense. He then lined up at receiver where he and quarterback Ty Davis found a matchup they liked. Late in the second quarter, Williams streaked up the left sideline when Davis threw him a jump ball that was batted down. The Tigers went back to the same play and Davis connected with Williams, who made a leaping catch, broke a tackle and ran for a 43-yard touchdown.
This set the tone for the second half, and the Tigers played a much better game. Louisville scored their final touchdown in the third quarter before the Tigers started their comeback in the fourth. Davis and Williams continued to exploit their matchup and connected for a second touchdown pass. The offense moved the ball well and scored a second fourth quarter touchdown for a final score of 20-28. It was a hard-fought game for bragging rights, and a great non-district test for late in the season.
The Tigers will be back at the Tiger Den this Friday for their final district matchup of the regular season against Northeast Jones. The Tigers are currently second place in the district standings at 2-1. Northeast Jones has the same district record and currently sits in third place. Playoff seeding is on the line in this final matchup, which is important in the playoffs. The second seed hosts the opening round of the playoffs and the third seed travels.
The Tigers will need fan support as they look to close their season on a high note in preparation for the playoffs.
