The Mendenhall Tigers struggled in their game last Friday against the Florence Eagles in a tough 6-36 loss. It was a peculiar showing for the Tigers as they typically start slow and gain momentum as the game progresses.
The first half was tightly contested with the Tiger defense able to keep the game close. Offensively the team has been sporadic and has struggled to sustain drives. The Tigers’ lone touchdown of the game came on a 37-yard pass from Ty Davis to Henry Funchess midway through the second quarter. It was a well-placed ball and a great catch by Funchess. The play served as an indicator of what this offense can become with more consistency.
The Tigers utilized a committee at running back to see what would stick. Each back had his moments and showed what he brought to the table throughout the game. It was the first snaps at running back for players such as Cameron Smith, and the Tigers will have a chance to build on this experience as the season continues. The offensive line play was solid, and the Tigers are still working to build good habits on the line that will turn 5-yard runs into 20-yard runs or more.
On defense the Tigers were disciplined through much of the first half. Senior defensive tackle Joshua Davis was a dominant presence inside, along with Kendell Walker and Princeton Miller. However, the Eagles were able to have success running off tackle and winning at the boundaries. The Eagle quarterback was also able to complete timely passes to keep drives alive leading to points.
The Eagles led 15-6 at halftime and were able to add two touchdowns to this lead in the third quarter. The Tigers continued to battle but fell short for a final score of 6-36.
The Tigers will have another opportunity to right the ship this Friday against Harrison Central as they look to protect homefield.
This Friday will be the Homecoming celebration for Mendenhall High School. The Homecoming ceremony will be held before the game and start at 6:15 p.m. Tiger fans are encouraged to come out and show their support this Friday at the Tiger Den.
