The Magee Trojans lit up the scoreboard in spectacular fashion Friday night, outlasting the Mize Bulldogs 41–36 in what has already become their highest-scoring game of the season. The result improves Magee’s record to 2–1, while Mize falls to 1–2.
From the opening whistle, this one was a back-and-forth offensive battle. Neither side could slow the other down. Mize struck early, but Magee responded in kind, pushing the pace and forcing Mize to keep up. By halftime, the Bulldogs held a slight edge, though the Trojans were just getting warmed up.
Magee quarterback Travon Magee was surgical, completing roughly 85.7% of his passes for 170 yards and a touchdown, keeping drives alive and mixing in key throws to move the chains. Meanwhile, running back Tyler Walker piled up 159 total yards and scored a touchdown, repeatedly breaking tackles and gaining critical yardage late in the game.
But the most electrifying moments came from Magee’s special teams. The Trojans scored 21 points on special teams alone, thanks in large part to a jaw-dropping kickoff return for a touchdown by Braeden Gregory. That return shifted the momentum at a critical moment in the second half and brought the crowd — and the Trojans — roaring back.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Trojans clung to a slim lead. Mize pushed hard and drove deep into Magee territory, but a clutch defensive stand by the Trojans — along with some heads‐up clock management — sealed the victory. When the final whistle blew, Magee had done just enough to escape with the win in a game that could have tilted either way.
The Trojans were led by quarterback Travon Magee, who threw for 170 yards and a touchdown while completing 85.7 percent of his passes. On the ground, Tyler Walker powered the rushing attack with 129 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 30 receiving yards. Rhudy Gregory led all receivers with 4 receptions for 52 yards. Braeden Gregory delivered a game-changing kickoff return for a touchdown on special teams and added a receiving touchdown, helping Magee swing the momentum in their favor. Defensively, Zyrenzo Hayes anchored the unit with a team-high 19 tackles. Kicker Brady Fairchild made 2 of 3 field goals and all 3 extra points.
Coach Chase Courtney praised the resolve of his squad, noting that after the season-opening loss to Mendenhall, the team emphasized finishing strong and staying composed under pressure. “Our kids showed grit,” Coach Courtney said. “We knew Mize was going to fight, and they did. But we found a way to win.”
The 41 points are the most Magee has scored in a game all season, far surpassing the 16-0 victory over Mount Olive and the 14 points they managed in the Simpson County Super Bowl. It was a welcomed sight for Trojan fans to see the team demonstrate their offensive prowess.
Up next, Magee returns home to face Collins Friday at 7 p.m., where they will look to build on the momentum from this thrilling win.
