The Magee Trojans put together four dominant quarters in route to their 47-6 victory over the Crystal Springs Tigers last Friday night. The Trojans opened district play with a statement win and protected homefield for their Homecoming celebration.
Everything was clicking early for the Trojans on both sides of the ball. The defense was stifling as Crystal Springs struggled at the line of scrimmage. Linebackers Quay Berkhalter and Zykerian Magee never let the opposing quarterback get comfortable and brought constant pressure off the edge. Middle linebacker DeLarrius Hayes continues to play at a high-level, roaming sideline to sideline making plays. The Trojan secondary was in good position to make plays and force turnovers.
The Trojans scored two defensive touchdowns in the game. Jeremiah Cole scored after returning an interception 52 yards, and Justin Floyd had a scoop and score on a recovered fumble.
The Trojan offense was equally impressive, led by Kendal Middleton. Middleton was dialed in from the start and posted an impressive 149.3 QBR. He was able to spread the ball around, completing passes to five different receivers. Middleton completed 6 of 9 pass attempts for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Ken Porter put on a show too, rushing for 78 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. Jeremiah Cole added another touchdown to his total with a 74-yard reception. Braeden Gregory caught two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. The offensive line did a great job protecting the quarterback and opening running lanes.
The Trojan offense was efficient and protected the ball, which led to the starters being able to post these numbers without playing much in the second half. This opened the door for younger players to get some in-game experience as the Trojans cruised to a 47-6 win.
Head Coach Chase Courtney was excited about the win and the atmosphere that Homecoming brought.
He said, “The biggest thing— I’m looking out at this crowd over here and it’s the first time we’ve had people tailgate inside the fence to my knowledge. It’s just a really neat atmosphere and it felt like it used to feel and that’s a good thing. Magee football used to be a big deal around here, and we want to make it a big deal again. That was a good crowd, and I appreciate the crowd coming out and supporting us. It felt good. We were able to put together four quarters and it was a good win.”
The Trojans are undefeated and will travel to Hazlehurst this Friday for their second district matchup.
