The Magee Trojans thoroughly defeated the Taylorsville Tartars 61-36 in a game full of twists and turns last Friday night.
The Trojans jumped out to a commanding lead, setting the tone quickly. Quarterback Kendal Middleton was in rhythm early with his receivers and the rushing attack was effective. The Trojans led 34-14 at halftime.
But following halftime, Taylorsville racked up 22 unanswered points, taking the lead at 36-34. When the Trojans adjusted their game plan, protected the football, and refocused, they recaptured their momentum, scoring 27 points and shutting down Taylorsville to win 61-36.
Head Coach Chase Courtney said, “It was a roller coaster, but we took care of business. We jumped out to a big lead and had a rocky start in the third. We couldn’t hang on to the ball and did some things we’re not accustomed to and went down in the third quarter. We woke up, corrected some things and were able to pull away. I’d like to see us be a little more consistent in our approach and execution. The execution was not where I wanted it to be.”
The Trojans posted a convincing win despite not playing their best football, which is a good sign moving forward. Courtney was asked about the Trojans’ fast start to the season and being 4-0.
He said, “We’re a little more confident in what we are doing and that goes a long way. It has become muscle memory and we’re reacting. Confidence has been the biggest thing, and playing harder even when we’re not playing as well as we should. We’re playing hard and if you’re playing hard sometimes that makes up for mistakes and lack of execution. That has been the difference in this 4-0 start versus us being 1-4 at this point last year.”
The Trojans start district play this Friday with their matchup against Crystal Springs, a game that will also serve as Homecoming for the Trojans. The Homecoming parade starts Thursdaynight at 5 p.m. and a pep rally will follow at the PriorityOne Bank corner.
