When the Magee Mayor and Board of Aldermen met Monday, September 15, 2025, Mayor Mark Grubbs announced that the city will reinstate the Veterans Day Parade.
The parade will be held on Tuesday, November 11. Grubbs is working locally with Holly Williams and the Army National Guard in Hattiesburg, MS, to plan the event.
Emergency Management Director John Kilpatrick announced that he is willing to offer a half-day training session in emergency management to board members and city employees at City Hall.
Magee Police Department has received two new Chevrolet Tahoes that are being outfitted with equipment.
A work permit has been issued for the property now owned by Tim Huynh on Main Avenue and work may begin soon. At this point, the site is an empty lot.
Christian Carrico, who has been instrumental in park development, gave an update on the status of Magee City Park; all the equipment is installed and turf installment was be be complete by the end of the week. Following extensive discussion about fencing costs, including an additional 400 linear feet of fencing and black vinyl coating totaling $66,702, the board heard from Forrest Dungan with Clearpoint Engineering. He offered an alternativ— to remove fencing from the current Struthers Recreation contract and request quotes from fencing contractors. The board agreed. Dungan will report back at the next board meeting scheduled October 7.
Alderwoman Allyson Berch presented a special events application from Pastor Ryan Wade with First Baptist Church for the use of Ural Everett Park for a prayer night onMonday, September 29 at 6 p.m. The board approved.
A representative from Southern Corrosion asked the board to approve an additional $5,630 to their annual contract on city water tanks for pressure washing of the tank near Love’s Truck Stop on Highway 49N only. The board approved the additional cost. Southern Corrosion will provide a copy of the original contract to City Attorney Wesla Sullivan.
Grubbs and Zoning Director Penny Aguirre presented a right of way ordinance to the board as the city does not have one. The board accepted the proposed ordinance. It will be on file for two weeks with the city for review before a final vote of approval is taken.
Brett Duncan with Prince CPA brought the final budget for fiscal year 2026 for approval, stating it is “as sound a budget as has ever been had in Magee.” He added that on October 1 the city will begin the year with about $2.4M but stipulated that it is from an entity perspective, not including General Fund or Water Fund. Duncan presented five measures for approval: to set the tax levy at 26 mils (as in 2025); approve the budget as presented; authorize the municipal clerk to publish the budget; amend the 2025 budget to actual; and, authorize the municipal clerk to advertise for annual grass cutting for three separate areas including airport, McNair Springs and Highway 49. The board approved all five measures.
Police Chief Denis Borges presented two quotes for light installation on the new police cruisers: $11,640 with Morris Installation and $12,055 from Clay Installation. The board accepted the lower bid. The board also approved Officer Shane Fewell to attend a Supervision of Leadership Level 2 Training December 12-16 for $329 and approved MPD to join the Wireless Communication Fund for purchase of computers and radios.
Aguirre requested and the board adopted the latest revised zoning map.
Dungan requested payment to Champion Construction of $20,635 for the City Park grating and the board approved.
Fire Chief David Craft and Building Inspector Duane Simmons submitted reports for the board’s review.
Public Works Director Tim Bray, Parks and Recreation Director Jimmy Zila and Airport Manager Mike Berry had nothing new to report.
