The Cougars extended their winning streak to three with a 19-17 win over the Presbyterian Christian Bobcats last we3ek.
The Bobcats scored first after a good drive ended with a rushing touchdown from 5 yards out. It was QB Barret McKenney’s second game back, and he looked to find his stride. McKenney had great chemistry with his receivers and the Cougars answered immediately.
McKenney hit Chase Adcock in the seam for a big gain with 15 yards tacked on due to a facemask penalty. He followed that up with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Chanse Funchess to even up the game at 7-7.
Funchess ended the Bobcats’ next drive with an incredible interception, which he snagged, falling to the ground to give his team the ball at the 42-yard line. The ball was worked to the 36-yard line on a short pass completed to Funchess. On the next play McKenney rolled to his left on a play action pass and threw a dime to Braden Duncan for a touchdown. But the play was called back due to a penalty, and the drive stalled.
Funchess ended the Bobcats’ drive again this time with a one-handed interception that he returned to the Cougar 45-yard line. The Cougars relied on their rushing attack on the next drive and picked up great yardage. Sam Smith was great running the ball between the tackles gaining more tough yards. However, the drive stalled near the goal line and ended with a blocked field goal attempt.
The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime. The Cougars fot the ball to start the second half, and Barret McKenney quickly gave his team the lead with a 65-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was blocked, and the Cougars led 13-7.
The Bobcats were able to move the ball on their next possession. The Cougar defense bent but did not break and kept the Bobcats out of the endzone. The Bobcats walked away with 3 points, making the score 13-10.
Both defenses played well for most of the third quarter as the teams continued to swap possessions. However, the Bobcats were able to break through with a 75-yard touchdown pass off a double move and take a 17-13 lead that would stand until late in the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats were looking to seal the game with a deep pass late in the fourth quarter, but it was broken up by Chanse Funchess before being intercepted by Hayes Berry.
At that point, the Bobcats left the door open for the Cougars and the home team capitalized. McKenney completed a 25 yard pass to Braden Duncan to move the ball to the 18 yard line. The Cougars did a great job managing the clock. With 50 seconds left in the game Hayes Berry punched in the game winning touchdown. The Cougar defense held to the final seconds of the game for an outstanding win to get back to .500.
The Cougars are now 3-3 and will face Brookhaven Academy this Friday, Oct. 4, on the road. Game time is 7 p.m.
