The SCA Cougars extended their winning streak to four games with a 49-20 win over Brookhaven Academy last Friday. The Cougars have been on a roll, and Head Coach Todd Mangum has been impressed with his team’s resilience and ability to find a way to win.
Mangum said, “It’s hard to beat a team that never quits.”
The Cougars took complete control of this game from the start. Big plays from Kade Walker helped the Cougars move the ball into the red zone before the opening touchdown was scored by Chanse Funchess on a pass from Barrett McKenney.
The Cougar defensive line came out firing on all cylinders. Branson Maddox and Eli Brewer dominated the line of scrimmage, stuffing the opposing running back in the backfield. The Cougars pressured the quarterback on the next play so that his errant pass was intercepted by Chanse Funchess to give his team the ball.
Barrett McKenney made a great read on the next play, breaking for a 50-yard gain. Hayes Berry walked in for a touchdown on the next play after the offensive line got a great push near the goal line. The Cougars took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Chase Adcock was in Brookhaven Academy’s backfield often making plays. Adcock dropped their ball carrier for a loss on third down to force a punt. The Cougars drove the ball with relative ease on the next possession with big plays from Sam Smith, Hayes Berry, and Chanse Funchess. Smith beat a defender around the right side of the line for a touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 21-0 following a Parker Pierce extra point.
Jack Lee ended Brookhaven’s next drive with a crushing sack that led to a fumble that was scooped up by Parker Pinkerton and returned for a touchdown to take a 28-0 lead.
Brookhaven was able to get on the score board after a kick return touchdown.
Kade Walker was featured heavily on the Cougars’ next drive in the passing game and mixed in on some jet sweeps, challenging the boundaries of Brookhaven Academy’s defense. The ball was moved to the 1-yard line and punched in by Berry. The Cougars led 35-6 at halftime.
Brookhaven Academy put together a scoring drive on their opening possession of the second half. Hayes Berry responded with a 51-yard touchdown run for the Cougars for a 42-13 lead. Brookhaven scored on a 50-yard touchdown run of their own the next possession. Sam Smith scored the final touchdown of the game with an option play for the final score of 49-20.
It was a dominant performance for the Cougars from start to finish. The Cougars will face district opponent Lamar this Friday on the road.
