Magee Public Library wrapped up its Summer Reading Program Friday, June 27 with the Dinosaur Experience featuring Ranger Martin Wilmott, along with T Rexes, Rexxy and Fluffy. There were 82 people in attendance.
This program is a first for the Simpson County libraries also featured at Harrisville and Mendenhall libraries.
Ranger Martin shared his love of libraries as he began his talk about all things dinosaur. The library provides an abundance of information on any and every subject in which anyone is interested. “It’s a really cool place to be!”
Children shared their favorite types of dinos too including brontosaurus, triceratops, flying dinosaurs, lasa raptors and the top contender, tyrannosaurus rex. Ranger Martin stated that for the last ten years each week a new dinosaur has been discovered; and, there are so many more that it will take 100 years to discover them all.
According to Ranger Martin the first fossil found was a claw from a maga raptor. It is called a killing claw because it is used to kill its prey. He also shared that dinos would regularly lose their teeth basically due to decay but they would grow back. It was not uncommon for them to come back 20 to 30 times. Dino teeth are the main fossils found due to the regeneration.
He then introduced toddler Rexxy, a mischievous puppet to the crowd. The kids were enthralled with the realistic movements and actions. Rexxy took great advantage to fool Ranger Martin while entertaining the crowd. He modified his behavior with the promise of chicken nuggets.
Next up was Fluffy, based upon size and attitude, a teenage T-Rex. Fluffy was not very mindful of Ranger Martin but listened to the junior rangers in training following commands well.
The program at Magee was sponsored by Peoples Bank and Stubbs Family Foundation. Upon registration each child in attendance received an age appropriate book on dinosaurs.
