The Mendenhall Mayoral Health Council hosted a health fair on December 10 at the community center.
The health fair featured guests from all over the county that included Happy Healthy MS, McGuffe’s Drugs, Magnolia Health, Simpson County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Track Club, Simpson General Hospital, Co-Lin, and the Mississippi State Department of Health. A blood drive was also held in conjunction with the health fair.
Visitors were able to gain a wealth of diverse knowledge on how to live a healthier lifestyle. Some of the main topics centered on a healthier diet that features more fruits and vegetables. Exercise was also an important topic, and everyone was encouraged to exercise at least three days a week for an hour. Other health tips highlighted abstaining from drugs and getting the proper amount of rest.
The health fair marked the final event for the Health Council during 2021. Alderwoman Janna Miller, with the help of MSDH Community Health Director Brittany Mosely and board members Jennifer Booth, Lashonda Mabry, Mattie Reed, Tammy Layton, Jack Ward, Sheriff Paul Mullins, Darryle Burton, and Shirley Burton, have worked hard to accomplish improved health for the community this year.
The Health Council was able to enter a shared use agreement with the Simpson County School District. The organization was also awarded a community mini grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health for $1100, and has applied for the T-Mobile $50,000 Revitalization Grant and Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthiest Hometown grant. The Health Council has also hosted a Farmers Market the second Saturday of each month. The council is currently working on a job fair to help educate the citizens of Mendenhall of the many available employment opportunities.
Miller explained that the council is currently looking for volunteers to join their board of directors.
She said, “We will be setting up a meeting to recruit board members. We need active members. We are looking forward to achieving even more next year, and for the health council to continue to grow and serve a healthier Mendenhall.”
Miller said, “We work actively to promote health and wellness in the community and we are seeking board members to help with ideas.”
