The Simpson Academy Cougars had a big matchup against Leake Academy last weeka team with which they have established a rivalry over the years. Both programs have had sustained success, and the district championship is usually decided by their matchup.
The Cougars competed hard from the start. The team had some success moving the ball on the ground but struggled to find their rhythm in the passing game on their opening drive. The defense forced a turnover on their first series, thanks to an interception from Sam Smith.
However, a turnover on the next drive by the offense gave Leake good field position. The defense held again after Leake moved the ball to the red zone. Chanse Funchess came up with an interception in the endzone, but the Cougar offense was still out of sync and was forced to punt again. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 0-0.
The defense held once again with big plays from Kane Butler and Eli Brewer to force Leake into a turnover on downs. The Cougars fumbled again on their next offensive possession to give the ball back to Leake.
Leake started their drive on the Cougars’ 41-yard line. Leake’s quarterback connected with his receiver for a 39-yard gain, setting up first and goal from the 1-yard line. Leake scored on a quick out route to take a 7-0 lead. Fans were in an uproar over a questionable call as to whether the receiver crossed the goal line.
After another punt by the Cougars, Leake put together a scoring drive in under two minutes to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
The Cougars’ struggles continued in the second half, and they fell to Leake Academy 0-27 in their final game of the regular season.
The Cougars finished their season at 5-5 overall and were 2-2 in district play for third place.
